Focus your learning style.

Not everyone learns in the same manner. There are 3 basic ways we process information. Be aware of your best style and focus on it. Also strengthen your skills by targeting a few of the strategies from other styles.

STYLE: Visual
Definition: learners remember best what they see or read.

Quality:
• They remember best when they use their eyes
• They understand material better when they read it themselves
• They are usually very organized, neat and attentive to details.

Tips:
• Colorful images, diagrams, demonstrations and charts are especially smart learning tools.
• Hightlighting directs the eye immediately to key information.
• Creating mental pictures of information make them easier to recall.
• Take good notes in lectures
• Reorganize notes to small cards that can be carried with you and reviewed at odd moments.
• To study for a test, do something you can see: draw pictures, make time lines, copy your notes, spellings words or math fact. If you get bored with paper, write or draw on a computer, or chalkboard as you study.
• Always wite down your assignments in one central assignment book.
• Don't be tempted to watch too much television because it is visual.

STYLE: Auditory
Definition: learners think in words.

Quality:
• They remember best what they hear.
• They tend to be good listeners and talkers
• They enjoy discussions and easily remembers what the teacher says..

Tips:
• Discuss lectures and class input with others during study sessions.
• Ask for an answer. When you hear it, write it down.
• Put notes on cards that you can carry, and review them OUT LOUD!
• At home, practice talking out loud to an imaginary audience. Hear what you're saying. Do you understand it?
• You may be able to tape important class sessions to get a double bonus for hearing them a second time.
• Complete reading assignments after your teacher discusses the material, whenever possible.
